From Bland to Bold

Do your dining room or kitchen chairs need an update? Mine did, so I purchased some inexpensive fabric from Hobby Lobby on their 40% off fabric week. Here's the before, which at the time, I loved. But, having a tendency to be somewhat too neutral, I needed to create some interest.

My seats are not attached to the chair, as I removed the bolts years ago and never put them back, so they just lift off. In many cases, this would not work, but mine are relatively heavy. First I removed the old fabric by using a knife or screwdriver to lift up the old staples. Dismantling the old is half the battle.

Next I used the old cover as a pattern and cut four new seat covers, being careful to line them up so the checks would be the same on each chair.

Then I laid the chair seat face side down on the fabric and centered it. I then began stapling the fabric to the seat. First stapling the center on the bottom, then top, and then side to side, pulling just taut enough so there was no loose fabric. You'll just need to eyeball it and you'll know when it feels right. Then I stapled along each side from each center to the corners. Next, the corners got stapled by pulling the corner in first, then folding over each side to create a nice finished corner.

I didn't worry about the underneath part because no one will see it, so that little detail doesn't bother me. If I was doing this for a client, I would make it clean and tidy. So as you can see, the finished cushion cover looks mighty pretty.

Here are two of the four and I am delighted with the result. So, if you have some chairs that you love, but want to change the seat covers, I encourage you to give this a try. Hope you enjoyed this diy. xo
