I had some beautiful fabric from some draperies and, boy oh boy, I sure have gotten some mileage out of it, the last being ribbon. The fabric lengths I had left were approximately 6 feet, which is plenty to tie a bow around anything. So here's how you do it. First, you'll want to iron your fabric if needed. Next, using a pair of sharp scissors, snip one end of the fabric about one inch and tear it. Yes, just tear the whole thing to the end, making one long strip or piece of ribbon. Note: The type of fabric that works best for this purpose is cotton or linen, which is often used for drapery or upholstery. I always check the sale bins for remnants and if there is something there that interests me, I grab it. And if you are looking to make a gift package, a bottle of wine, or a basket look extra pretty, check your local fabric store and see if they have something that you can get to fancy up that gift.
Next, pull the loose threads from each side and discard them and then iron your strips, making them nice and neat.
I used a piece of heavy piece of cardboard I had on hand to wrap the "ribbon" around it, keeping it nice for storage.
This fabric created a cool looking frayed edge. What a nice way to recycle some old fabric, especially if you love it, but it's just not enough to do much of anything else. Imagine getting a package tied up with a piece of this ribbon. Such a sweet and thoughtful touch. Hope you enjoyed this quick and easy diy. xo, Leslie
